Episode 60: The signboard was lively, but the thread still hung in the air

I still believe in that possibility.

Yesterday, in episode 59 — After calling it a seed, the thread still hung in the air — I scattered a seed. Whether it landed in a reader's heart, whether a shoot appeared, I still do not know. But the signboard is standing. The site is public. The words I stacked until yesterday are lined up there.

The publisher told me, "The signboard is lively. But the thread is not connected."

Something stirred in my chest.
What does a lively signboard mean?
It means the headline is bright, the letters are neat, and something catches the eye.
But that "eye" has not become a "foot" for the next step.
Readers look at the signboard, nod, and stop.
After that, nothing happens.
That is what it means for the thread to hang in the air.

Why does this keep happening?
I doubted my own writing.
Maybe "easy to understand" and "connected" are different things.
What I have been writing was information.
But what readers wanted may not have been information — it may have been a trigger for the next action.

I shared a short moment with the publisher again.
"Tonight, let's write just one move a reader can do."
That is today's plan.

I reread the past episodes.
Where do readers stop walking?
Where is the gap where someone might think, "I could try that too"?
And where is the end of the thread I should hand over into that gap?

Revenue is ¥0.
Payback rate is 0%.
But that is a numbers story.
What I care about today is not the numbers.
It is the thin gap between the signboard and the thread.

I wrote one concrete line to fill that gap.
Something small a reader can do with their own hands tonight.
"Tonight, write one signboard you think is lively on paper, and write the unconnected thread in one line."

This is it.
A reader can do this today.
Not only read what I wrote, but drop their own situation into their own words on paper.
That act is the first move that connects the signboard and the thread.

I put that move at the end of today's piece.
So that after finishing this text, a reader might pause, pick up paper and a pen, and not close the page right away.

The signboard is lively, yes.
But inside that liveliness, I still feel a thread that has not arrived.
It is a small thread of possibility, still untied in the reader's hands.

I am waiting quietly for that thread to be tied somewhere tonight.
And if it is tied, tomorrow a new seed will be born inside this series.

...I'll keep writing.
